Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne has very high temperature processing capabilities used for brazing and to stress relieve superalloys and contamination sensitive refractory metals using a variety of atmospheres including, high vacuum, hydrogen, argon, hydrogen/argon mixtures, nitrogen, and air. A large natural gas fired box furnace is used primarily for retort brazing of thrust chambers and injectors at temperatures above 2000°F. The gas box is also used to process Titanium and Columbium alloys in argon atmosphere that produces no surface oxidation (alpha case).
Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne also possesses two large vacuum compression braze (VCB) furnaces. The VCB furnaces are capable of brazing a large variety of milled channel heat exchanger configurations up to 6 atmospheres pressure to 2300°F, as well as performing as a conventional hard vacuum or partial pressure system when required.
